And now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Ahhhh…. I needed that break. Thanks for hanging out and waiting ever so patiently for my return. I hate to say all the cliche’d things like I had to catch up on things around the house and I’ve been so busy, but they are true.

So, let’s see, what was going on for the last few weeks? My little dude turned 11, started football and then middle school all within the span of two weeks. Aside from just the change of going from elementary to middle school, his new school is across the county because he is in a pre-engineering program that is not offered at our home school. He knows no one at the new school, which is really hard for him. And it’s hard for me to see him struggle with those first awkward days of being at a new school. I have to say though, he is adjusting to all the changes like a champ.

After a hard workout.

My daughter started college this week also. I don’t even know how to describe how insanely proud we are of her. She decided not to stay in the dorms, so she is making a 40 minute commute three times a week. She is making new friends and participating in the school sponsored activities, so I don’t think she’s missing the living-on-campus life too much.

My hubby and daughter

I’ve also been trying to clean up the garage. It’s overflowing with stuff we need to sell or get rid of, and it is too darn hot still to have a yard sale. I can’t wait for cooler weather to come –  it will be nice to have some walking room in there.

Our old AC was slowly die-ing a sad, slow, expensive death, so we had to replace it. At thirteen years old, it was taking longer to cool the house, and was leaking cool air into the garage. And since we live in South Florida, our AC was keeping our electric bills high all year round.

The Beast – it reminds me of those movies that show the loud machines in a scary basement… Can you see the eyes and mouth and arms?? Nightmares are made of that monster!

That’s a project and a half, especially when you have tons of furniture in the way. At least it gave me the opportunity to go through some of the things on that side of the garage, and I found some things I forgot about having. It was like going shopping in my own house! The new AC is fabulously quiet, and will hopefully save us some money on our electric bill.

We’ve been trying to get some estimates for our bathroom remodel, but have had a heck of a time getting people to come out to give us quotes. And of the three we’ve had out, only one has gotten back to us with an estimate. In an economy that is in the toilet, aren’t people supposed to be more willing and able to work? Very few people return phone calls, follow up or show any kind of initiative. It’s kind of depressing. Especially when I want to start the project already!! It’s UGLY!!

Don’t you just love the unique and beautiful lighting? Ugh

We would try to do the work ourselves, but part of the project is to completely gut the shower – which we could do – and rebuild it – which we don’t know anything about.

It’s like taking a shower in a cave. A dirty cave. Ick.

I’ve seen one too many DIY disaster shows to make an attempt at something so important. Besides, it would probably take us months to get it done, and I don’t have the patience for that.

I did get to a few projects too. I painted the backsplash in my kitchen. Big improvement. Then I tried to get creative with it – which didn’t work out so well. Oh well. I painted a bedside table for my daughter’s room – very cute! I stained the coffee table on the porch – so quick and easy, I can’t wait to show you!! And I have been shopping for tile for our bathroom remodel. The number of tile choices are insane! I’ll have some posts soon on all those things to catch you all up.

For now, I’m off to figure out what to do with my dining room furniture. I think I’ll be asking for your help with that. I can’t make up my mind which direction to go with it.

What have you been up to for the past few weeks??

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Eliesa, you’ve been busy! Now that the kids are back in school, you can get even more done. I remember those days. I always had big plans for when the kids were back in school. Hubby and I remodeled both our bathrooms, but we had to hire someone to do all the tile. I just didn’t want to attempt that. I can’t wait to see what you do with the bathroom.

Now that Vinnie has us (me and him) up at 5:30, I “should” be able to get to even more projects. That is, if I don’t crawl back into bed after I drop him off! LOL

  2. Love the pictures of the fam and I can’t wait to see your bathroom remodel : ) What a bummer that you’re having a hard time getting a good contractor to do the work… scary thing is, if you have trouble getting people to follow-up with you, will they be reliable to get the job done?!?? Hope you find a good one soon!! Yeah, summer is tough… I had a long list of things I had hoped to get done but it’s just so hard with the kiddos – so you are definitely not alone!! Miss you xoxo

Now that two out of three are in school, maybe you can tackle a few of the things on your list. Or not. :) We have to get together soon, Chica. xoxo

  3. What a beautiful family you have! Your daughter is absolutely gorgeous!
Yeah, I too am glad the kids are back in school so we all can get back to our normal routines. I think I started at least half dozen projects over the summer which have yet been completed!
I’m also having the same issues with outside help, only mine is finding someone to help with yard work. I can no longer weed my flower beds because of needing a knee replacement, but it seems no one wants to work!
I’m very anxious to see what you do with your bathroom because we have the exact same lighting! It’s not only the fixtures that I hate in mine, but also these huge mirrors that top the counters that run the length of the bathroom. Ugh…. I don’t need scales to tell me how much weight I’ve gained! Stepping out of the shower, it’s in full view!

Freida – you made me laugh with that “full view” comment because that’s how I feel about our mirrors! I have to decide what to do with our big blah mirror, or should I say, two mirrors. I want something smaller, but I don’t know what to replace it with, and I’m having some anxiety about picking the perfect one.

  4. i had that lighting in my bathroom, too. Only it my case it went completely around the mirror. Oh, and when I moved in, I had silver and gold METALLIC wallpaper. I got rid of the wallpaper right away, but it took 10 years before I got the light changed out. Soooo much better now.

My sister had silver and gold metallic wallpaper in her kitchen when she bought it. Maybe it’s the same kind? Butterflies all over it. It was lovely. Okay, not really, but it made the kitchen “shine”! Those lights were in all the bathrooms when we bought the house, but we’ve changed the ones in the kids’ bathrooms already. After I figure out the mirrors, I have to pick the perfect lights. This is getting stressful!! LOL!

  5. You have been a busy beaver and on top of that you have a hurricane to deal with! Can’t wait to see your latest projects you’ve been working on. Your kids are the cutest things in town!

I do believe you are correct – they really are adorable, aren’t they?! Anyway, Isaac dropped a lot of water on us. Like an insane amount. There is about 8 to 10 inches of water around the whole house. Thank God that the house was built up on a hill, or we would have been under water! The shed might be ruined. It’s depressing, and yet, I am grateful that it was only water and no one got hurt.
