Have you ever found a gorgeous piece of furniture that needed some love, but NOT paint? I have a few pieces like that – those that deserve to be loved back to their original beauty.
Unfortunately, I am not an expert on that kind of “re-do” so I was glad to come across this post a few months ago. I read a blog post by Miss Mustard Seed about using oil and vinegar to clean and revitalize wood. I put it in the back of my mind, but didn’t have the opportunity to try it out until now.
This little diamond in the rough has been sitting in my garage for quite a while now.
It had some water marks and was dusty and super dirty, and to be honest, I was thinking of painting it if it didn’t look better when I cleaned it up.
So, I mixed up some vinegar and canola oil. I used 3/4 cup oil, and 1/4 cup white vinegar and mixed it up in an old spaghetti sauce jar.
And I got to cleaning…
You can tell the difference right away.
And then after…
The vinegar smell isn’t too bad, and it fades after a little while.
The wood is back to it’s original, gorgeous state. It is warm and rich and smooth.
I wish I had better after pictures, but after I cleaned the cabinet, I moved it to the storage area to wait for it’s new owner
I will use this mixture again, especially when just a little elbow grease will make a piece shine.
Thanks for stopping by!
