Pins I’ve tried – Homemade Pore Strips – Beauty edition
Pore strips can be pretty costly, but I love how they work to get the gunk out of my pores. So, when I saw this next pin, I knew I had to try it for myself. Whoo-hoo! I love a cheap beauty treatment! The Crafty Little Gnome Blog is where I found this pin.
Yesterday while at Walmart, I picked up a little box of Knox unflavored gelatine. It was only $0.74 for a box of four packets. I was pretty excited to try this because I used to love the Biore Pore Strips, but they got pretty expensive if you wanted to use them all the time. And they don’t do your whole face.
The Crafty Little Gnome’s post says to take on teaspoon of gelatine, and two teaspoons of water and mix it together. Microwave it for 10 seconds. Then (after making sure it’s not too hot) smear it all over the areas you have clogged pores. Let it dry. And finally, peel it off. Follow up with a swipe of toner and add moisturizer.
Okay, so I did all that. And I’m not going to share pictures, because in this case, it’s just gross…
Let’s talk about what happened when I tried it. First, it smells like UGH. Disgusting. Second, I apparently didn’t put it on thick enough, because it didn’t come off in big pieces, but in itty-bitty, teeny-tiny scraps. And it took me forever to peel it off. I eventually had to just go wash it off my face with a washcloth and some facial cleanser.
I didn’t see much of a difference in my skin when all was said and done, but it was pink and irritated. Oh, and I got some in my eyebrows, and pulling those pieces off was torture. By the way, The Crafty Little Gnome does warn about those things, but they happened anyway.
I’m going to have to say this was a fail for me. Bummer. My cheapskate heart was hoping it was going to work 🙁
Have you tried anything from Pinterest that didn’t work out as you were hoping? Tell me all about it!

Have I tried anything that didn’t work out….? Well, I did give a shot to this painted chair thing I saw… lol- epic fail! Then I did it a second time and it was a fabulous success! (tee hee)

LOL when I started reading the email notification to my son who happened to be in the room, he said, “ewww those are disgusting. It smells bad and it doesn’t work.” I guess he had the same results as you!!

Awww, I was hoping the Gelatine would work! I’m a sucker for all these home remedies! The ones I’ve tried that failed have been mostly for keeping mosquitoes away! I don’t know if it’s because these here in MS are the size of dragonflies, but nothing seems to work. If you ever see the postcard that mentions these critters being the state bird, believe it! ; )

It did stink! 🙂
I am going to try it again, only using a few more steps that another commenter recommended – and adding a drop of lavender oil.

We tried this with all 3 of my teenagers and had different results with each. The best results were for my son, who “prepped” his skin ahead of time. We found some instructions that said to exfoliate first and then steam the skin… he just washed his face with a washcloth and then held it over a cup of steaming water for a bit. We applied the gelatin mix pretty thick and let it dry for 15-20 minutes. The results, while totally gross!, were as good as the Biore strips, but covered a much larger area. Might be worth another try!

I will give it another shot, and make sure to do the prep for it this time. What do I have to lose, other than some blackheads. Ewww…

I saw another one that said to mix with milk, not water.

Did you try it with milk? I would think it would be even stinkier??

Since I have two teenage daughters I too wanted something less pricy than the Biore strips. I was lucky enough to watch a YouTube video that works for them great. It sounds gross but the results are amazing. You take some egg whites (make sure not to get any but the white)and whip it up once your finished apply to a clean dry area and apply a sheet of toliet paper. Let dry and remove. It sounds gross but you can see the results at the end just like a biore strip. Hope this works for you like it did for my girls.

I tried this and it broke me out.

Oh, that stinks! Literally 🙂 I hate when that happens, but it does happen to me too when I try a new pore cleaner. I have been told that it’s a good sign that it’s working and will get better. Or it could be a bad reaction. Either way, I usually stop using that product.

I had great success with this and do it about once a month. It did take some trial and error to get the consistency right so that it peels off- I usually have enough to do a good t-zone layer. The recipe is not enough to do the whole face and have it peel off right. Yes it smells gross but not for long. I say give it another go 🙂
